About Project

The Blue Economy Innovation and Investment Summit is an annual event that brings together global leaders, investors, and innovators to discuss sustainable solutions and investments in the blue economy.

Task

As the digital face of the summit, the website is essential for attracting participants, sharing information, and facilitating registrations. The original website, launched for the 2023 summit, had significant shortcomings that impacted user engagement, usability, and overall effectiveness. As the lead UX/UI designer, I spearheaded the 2024 redesign to address these issues, resulting in a modern, user-friendly website that better aligns with the summit’s objectives and enhances user experience.

Why the redesign?

Problem Statement

The previous website struggled with high bounce rates and low user engagement due to an outdated design, convoluted navigation, and poor mobile optimization. Key information such as the summit agenda and registration details were difficult to find, leading to a decline in registrations and frustration among users. The site also failed to effectively communicate the significance of the summit, resulting in a lack of interest from potential attendees.
These challenges necessitated a comprehensive redesign to create a more user-centric, visually appealing, and responsive website.

Research Process

User Research

Conducted qualitative research, including interviews and surveys with past attendees, stakeholders, and potential users to understand their needs, pain points, and behaviors. Insights revealed that users found the navigation confusing, the design outdated, and the mobile experience frustrating.

Competitive Analysis

Analyzed websites of similar high-profile summits to identify best practices and benchmarks for user experience, design aesthetics, and content structure. This helped inform the direction of the redesign and ensure that the new website met industry standards.

Design Process

01

Information Architecture

Reorganized the site’s structure to create a logical, user-friendly flow. Key sections were strategically placed in the navigation menu, ensuring users could access information within three clicks. Developed sitemaps and user flows to validate the new structure.

02

Wireframing and Prototyping

Created low-fidelity wireframes to outline the layout and functionality of key pages. Iteratively tested these wireframes with a sample of users to refine the structure based on feedback. High-fidelity prototypes were then developed in Figma, incorporating visual elements to enhance usability and aesthetic appeal.

03

Visual Design

Developed a modern and visually engaging design system inspired by oceanic themes, using blues and greens to evoke sustainability. Typography was chosen for readability, and imagery was selected to highlight the summit’s innovative focus. Created a consistent visual language that conveyed trust and forward-thinking values.

04

Usability Testing

Conducted usability testing on the high-fidelity prototypes with real users to validate design decisions. Feedback was collected on navigation ease, visual appeal, and overall experience, which guided final adjustments to the design.

Key Features of the Redesign

Enhanced Homepage

The new homepage prominently features the summit’s mission with a hero section video, clear CTAs, and a visually engaging layout that immediately communicates the summit’s value proposition.

Simplified Navigation

A clean, sticky navigation bar ensured easy access to important sections like the agenda, speakers, and registration. Dropdown menus were introduced to provide a better-organized and user-friendly experience.

Interactive Agenda

The agenda page was redesigned to include interactive filters, allowing users to sort sessions by day, topic, or speaker. This feature personalized the user experience and made it easier for attendees to plan their participation.

Responsive and Mobile-Optimized Design

The redesigned website was fully optimized for mobile, with faster load times and a touch-friendly interface that maintained design integrity across all devices.

Outcome and Results

01

Increased Engagement

The redesign resulted in a 40% reduction in bounce rate, with users spending more time exploring the agenda and speaker profiles.

02

Higher Registration Rates

The streamlined registration process contributed to a 35% increase in completed registrations compared to the previous year.

03

Positive User Feedback

User feedback highlighted the improved navigation and visual appeal, particularly the interactive agenda and the ease of accessing information on mobile devices.

04

Stakeholder Praise

The modernized design and improved usability were well-received by stakeholders, aligning with the summit’s vision and contributing to a stronger brand presence online.

Lessons Learned

Conclusion

The website redesign of the Blue Economy Innovation and Investment Summit successfully addressed critical usability issues, resulting in a visually appealing, engaging, and user-friendly platform. By applying a research-driven design process, leveraging modern design principles, and prioritizing user feedback, the redesigned website now better reflects the summit’s mission, significantly improving engagement and driving higher participation.
